Route reconnaissance for exceptional loads

Transformers, pressure vessels, industrial modules, construction plant and other indivisible loads can exceed routine dimensions long before their weight becomes the only concern. A viable motorway segment may lead to a constrained urban approach where a low telecom cable, signal head, arched bridge or mature tree canopy blocks the intended travel line. Street furniture, narrow alignments and temporary works can further complicate the final kilometres. A desktop route is therefore a starting point, not proof that an abnormal load will fit.

Early route reconnaissance and corridor assessment let operators compare alternatives before committing equipment, escorts and stakeholder resources. In jurisdictions using systems such as ESDAL, and wherever abnormal-load notifications or authority submissions are expected, a current, traceable field record helps teams communicate the actual constraints without relying solely on old notes or posted dimensions. Local notification and approval requirements remain the responsibility of the transport team and relevant authorities.

What MeasurePRO captures

Mounted on the survey vehicle, MeasurePRO uses a SolTec 2D LiDAR sensor with ±2 mm accuracy and a 0.2–250 m range to measure overhead obstructions while the corridor is driven at normal traffic speed. Bridges, gantries, signals, power and telecom lines, catenary, vegetation and other overhead features are captured rather than checked as isolated spot measurements. Dual GPS/GNSS positioning ties observations to the route, and synchronized 360-degree camera evidence gives the office team visual context for each location.

The rugged-tablet Windows 10/11 application works fully offline, which matters on rural corridors and cross-border reconnaissance where dependable connectivity cannot be assumed. From measured corridor to route decision

When connectivity returns, the field survey syncs to RoadScope. RoadScope—not MeasurePRO—provides the route-analysis environment where planning teams review mapped constraints, compare measured clearances with the transport envelope, inspect camera evidence and develop reports and client deliverables. That separation keeps field capture focused while preserving one continuous data chain from reconnaissance to planning.

Engineers and transport planners can then evaluate a diversion, utility intervention, temporary street-furniture removal or a different travel line with shared evidence.
